Often prescribed are anti-seizure medications, beta-blockers, Botox, or tranquilizers. Instead, the medications prescribed are indicated for other disorders, but the effects of taking them can sometimes reduce tremor. There are no specific medications for an essential tremor. If physical or occupational therapy has not helped, medications can be prescribed. Physical therapists can provide specific muscle exercises that can help with control, coordination and muscle strength.Īn occupational therapist can help you work through your essential tremor in everyday activities with the use of weights and teaching the use of heavier and wider grip tools for specific daily activities. Physical therapy and occupational therapy are one way an essential tremor can be improved. However, if the essential tremor is getting so that everyday activities are becoming difficult, your doctor might suggest physical or occupational therapy, medications, or surgery depending on the severity of the tremor. All rights reserved.Essential tremors can be mild enough that no treatment is necessary. If larger trials validate the safety and ascertain the efficacy and durability of this new approach, it might change the way that patients with essential tremor and potentially other disorders are treated.Ĭopyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. MR-guided focused ultrasound might be a safe and effective approach to generation of focal intracranial lesions for the management of disabling, medication-resistant essential tremor. Another patient developed a deep vein thrombosis, potentially related to the length of the procedure. One patient had postoperative paraesthesias which persisted at 3 months. This reduction was accompanied by functional benefits and improvements in writing and motor tasks. Mean reduction in tremor score of the treated hand was 89♴% at 1 month and 81♳% at 3 months. Patients showed immediate and sustained improvements in tremor in the dominant hand. Outcome measures included tremor severity in the treated arm, as measured by the clinical rating scale for tremor, and treatment-related adverse events. Patients underwent tremor evaluation and neuroimaging at baseline and 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Four patients with chronic and medication-resistant essential tremor were treated with MR-guided focused ultrasound to ablate tremor-mediating areas of the thalamus. Our study was done in Toronto, Canada, between May, 2012, and January, 2013. We examined its application to the management of essential tremor. MR-guided focused ultrasound is approved to treat patients with Parkinson’s disease. Patients must be at least 22 years of age. Approval is for treatment of one side of the brain only. MR-guided focused ultrasound has been developed as a non-invasive means of generating precisely placed focal lesions. MR-guided focused ultrasound is approved for the treatment of essential tremor that cannot be controlled with medication. Although often effective, these treatments have risks associated with an open neurosurgical procedure. Surgical therapies, using lesioning and deep brain stimulation in the thalamus, have been used to treat essential tremor that is disabling and resistant to medication. Essential tremor is the most common movement disorder and is often refractory to medical treatment.
